FAQ
1How old does my child need to be to take a lesson?
At Otis Ridge we require that children be at least 4 years of age to take a group skiing lesson and 8 years of age for a group snowboard lesson. We do offer 30 and 60-minute private lesson instruction for younger children. However, please keep in mind that there is no magic age so please consider your child's physical development, stamina, attention span and most importantly their desire to learn a new sport.
2What is the difference between a Group lesson and a Private Lesson?
In a Group Lesson the student will be in a class with students of a similar age and ability and the lesson content will focus on a similar theme or a common skill need. Private Lessons allow for much more student input and individual attention, lesson content is based on the individual needs and desired outcomes of the student. Also with a Private Lesson you have the ability to request the instructor, depending on their schedule, if you so choose. Please keep in mind that during busy time periods many of our instructors have their schedules booked far in advance so we recommend that you consider booking your lesson as soon as you know that you will be coming. (We do charge a small cancellation fee for cancelled request privates)
3What Should I expect when I arrive at the Ski Area?
You will need to do several things before the lesson begins. Most ski school registration is done on-line and prepaid with limited availability the day of. You will need to check in at the Ski School Desk located in the Main Lodge. The ski school desk can get very busy close to lesson times, so to be sure that you are ready for your lesson on time, be at the Ridge at least 45 minutes ahead of your class time, an hour during busy holiday periods.
Next you will need to change into your ski clothes if you are not already wearing them and then proceed to the rental shop to rent your equipment if you are renting equipment. Be sure if you are renting equipment that you give yourself at least 45 minutes to get ready.
4What time are Lessons?
We offer Group Lessons for all ability levels at 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Private Lessons are generally scheduled for 9:00 AM and 12:00 noon. Depending on our volume of business, we may be able to accommodate private lessons at other times; but again this is dependent on instructor availability. At this time we are also expanding our ability to offer lessons during our evening hours, please call ahead to check for availability.
5Does my Child need a helmet?
We do not require that students in our lessons wear helmets; we do however strongly encourage it. There are a limited number of helmets available for rent through our rental shop and they are also available for sale in our full service ski shop.
